English slides: the International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination
What is the International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination? Why is it important and what can we learn from it?
Slides for L1 and L2 English learners to find out more about the importance of racial equality while building their English skills.
The International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is held on March 21st every year. A combination of texts, images and videos are used to question, and encourage active listening, discussion and research skills. There is much coverage of key/technical vocabulary, the importance of language and the use of statistics. Punctuation, fact & opinion, and organisational features are also touched upon. A series of challenging prompts are provided for whole class discussion. For reading, short texts can be used to consolidate various comprehension skills such as language features and understanding key/technical vocabulary. There is also a separate Word document with detailed, thought-provoking comprehension questions for a set of four texts that are introduced on slide 10. The final task is to write an article.
