## New Year 2022 English and Maths tasks

A hastily put-together New Year resource based on a short Guardian article about the record breaking temperatures experienced in the UK on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

3 pages of English questions split into topics (reading skills, punctuation and abbreviations, words and language).  Questions vary in level from E3 to L2. Some are challenging. One page of maths questions (mostly L1) with a focus on comparing and calculating with decimals to one decimal place (i.e. temperatures).

## E3-L1 How to check your answers with reverse calculations

A good way for learners to understand the importance of using reverse calculations to check an answer to a previous question.  These check questions are appearing more and more in functional skills exams. I hope you find it as useful as I and my learners do.

Editor's note

Carefully differentiated practice in this important skill. All four operations (+, -, x, ÷) are covered. A set of 15 practical problems. An important and useful resource: so many learners lose marks by omitting checks to their work. No answer sheet. An E2-3 version is also available.

## 2D and 3D shapes including nets

These two PowerPoints cover the properties of  2D and 3D shapes (E2-E3) - faces, edges, vertices and line symmetry. This is assessed using a quiz in PPT1. Both PPTs then move on to recognising nets and drawing nets of cubes and cuboids (now found in Level 1 exams). The second PPT can be printed off and used as a workbook.  I have also included two links to You tube but you can use your own favourite shape/nets video links if you prefer.

## Addition & subtraction for E3-L1 Reformed Functional Maths

I've just designed this ready for my new starts in September.  It is surprising how many learners come that get basic things wrong.

As we know FS is all about reading the questions and showing workings out.  I always do 5 weeks of no calculators as for some they just do not get the borrowing / carrying over and this is of course important on the non calculator papers now.

There is also an E2-E3 version of this resource.

## Skillscheck for L1 Functional Skills Maths

A resource I designed to help my L1 Functional Maths learners revise and check on areas they needed to work on. Covers ratio, mean, percentages, problem solving, fractions, area , volume and more!

Editor's note

Fabulous practice and revision! Fully mapped to the Reformed Functional Maths criteria. If you are a resource contributor, an answer sheet is available :)
See our Answer Sheets page for more details.

## New Job - smartboard version

This is the resource for L1 learners submitted by Hannah Yates on 2 June 2017, but updated with 2020 figures for JSA (job seekers allowance) and Tax allowance.

Now in SMART notebook format to use whilst screen sharing in a virtual teaching session.  Answers are included on the slide following each question (and under the shades on the table on slide 3).
