Writing assessments, tasks or prompts

A set of exercises based on an article from the BBC News website.
The article concerns a survey conducted by iPhone. There is a comprehension exercise, an exercise involving the identification of spelling errors and a synonym exercise. The learner is also asked to write their views. Useful for those working towards the Level 2 Certificate in Adult Literacy.

There is a set of comprehension questions, a homophone exercise and an
anagrams puzzle. There is a short writing task.

Based on texts about Christian celebrations in four different countries (Wales, Iran, Venezuela, China) the resource includes a writing exercise for students who don’t celebrate Christmas.

All activities are based on a New Year’s Eve theme. The main text and related comprehension questions are about New Year’s Eve superstitions. Other activities include form filling, alphabetical order, dictionary work, planning and writing, and group discussion.

Three differentiated writing tasks / practice papers on the same theme. First, you apply to appear in a Christmas Concert at the village hall. Later, you hear you have got a place in the concert and write an email inviting your friends to come and watch.

I wrote these tasks as an informal summative assessment end-of-term activity for a mixed level E1-E3 group of 16-19 year-olds, but they are suitable for any age group.

An excellent set of L2 literacy/Functional English tasks based on a topical text about New Year’s resolutions.
Used as a mock exam, the first 12 questions are in the style of the Adult Literacy multiple choice exam and cover spelling, comprehension, punctuation, tone, vocabulary, etc. They are followed by several challenging writing, summarising and purpose/structure questions that are also be suitable for Functional Skills English.

Based on a BBC Religions – Paganism article, this is an interesting reading comprehension for the long winter months. It also includes a cloze exercise and some short writing and research activities.

Comprehension questions, writing and discussion based on car adverts. This resource is suitable for motor vehicle students, or a more general audience.

Learners can discuss the important features of a car advert and the advice they would give their tutor. They can then practice writing their own car adverts (not full sentences). They can also write down the advice they would give their tutor, using full sentences and paying attention to spelling and punctuation.
