VALBEC (Victorian Adult Literacy and Basic Education Council)
VALBEC is a major Canadian body for networking, professional development, sharing information and promoting good practice in adult literacy (and numeracy – see below).
You can enrol and receive an informative free monthly newsletter. Back issues (dating back to 2004) are available but are not searchable which means you must open up each issue and skim through to find interesting things.
The site has links to conference papers and presentations including *Exploring an intensive reading pedagogy in adult literacy – a fascinating presentation by Dr. David Rose at the May 09 VALBEC conference.
Note that due to a recent VALBEC survey the following changes are planned for 2011: “Numeracy: will be a VALBEC priority in 2011. This will start with a numeracy forum as part of our Sharing Good Practice event (20 May) to find out exactly what is needed and who is out there to help provide it”.
*Editor's note: Conference papers and presentations are current (2018) but only date back to 2011 so this presentation is sadly no longer available (but there are plenty more!). Also, please be patient. Site is very slow to load.
