This resource has been designed using ideas in the popular Celebrity BMI resource (From Janet Wilkins – see below) already available on Skillsworkshop but adapted to suit the needs of Entry/ Level 1 learners.
[img_assist|nid=5329|title=|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=100|height=70]A set of differentiated tasks for construction students. I used the E3-L1 task with my Entry to L1 group and then the more challenging task with my L1-L2 students.
The use of measure is aways useful for my students as it is something they need to practise constantly given their vocational areas. The lesson was enjoyed by all, especially the hands-on measuring task prompted lots of fun and discussion. Encourage students to get others to check their measurements and validate their results.
Students fill in how they spend their time. Some may colour code, some may write in the boxes. Then they work out how much time they spend on each activity per week.
It’s up to them (or you!) how they present their answers. For example, as a written report, as bullet points, as a bar chart, pie chart (using a spreadsheet), etc.
This is a worksheet with several problems based on everyday situations where students perform a division and need to interpret the remainders to give an acceptable answer.

A Functional Maths activity based on a group of friends going out for a drink together. The main focus of the activity is on money and time calculations, but there are other elements included for variety.

This carousel of Jubilee tasks was hurriedly put together for a group of 10 E1-E3 Functional Maths and English 16-19 year old learners who had just (very successfully!) finished all their Edexcel Functional Skills assessments.
After a year of hard work from my students, the emphasis was on celebration and fun. However, learning objectives included: measuring, counting, writing an email, spelling, 2D shapes, estimating, rounding and working with money. Rough lesson outline also included.

A high interest worksheet which uses the layout of engines to reinforce some basic mathematical concepts, and to encourage reading. Lots of discussion points.

The activity is based on recent changes to the minimun wage (Nov 2011). Students have to read the information given on the shop employees’ ages and new minimun pay to work out how much the staff are paid for their work.
I used this activity with my E3 students and they enjoyed it.
