Adult Numeracy, Functional Maths, and GCSE Resources

An adapted version of Judith White’s pancake resource aimed at Level 1 (see below). I have created this resource to use with Entry 3 (and slightly higher E3/L1) learners.

Four tasks based on a traditional pancake recipe. Space is provided for showing working out and one task involves independent web research.

Covers number, simple proportion, money, time and measures. All three process skills are covered.

A multi-functional resource for Literacy or Numeracy. Sample TV listings by day, programme, start and end times, channel and genre. Use for alphabetic or numeric sorting, skimming and scanning exercises, literacy social sight vocabulary for days of the week, numeracy exercises for calculating time, etc. This resource contains some sample exercise questions to use which can be developed further according to need. I laminated the sheets and then cut up into days so lower level learners can move the elements around. Higher level learners can work from the whole page sheets as well.

A fabulous multi-level, multiple-skills project which clearly demonstrates how Functional English, Maths and ICT can be embedded into vocational teaching. Includes budgeting, forecasting, writing business plans, group discussion and much more. Ideal for (and fully mapped to) E3-L2 Functional English and Maths.

A wonderful dice game that will also improve money skills (addition and subtraction) and awareness of negative numbers.
Plus extension L2 statistics questions. Ideal for work skills students and fully mapped to L1 Functional Maths criteria.

A great set of two tasks. Task 1 is based on fitting out a kitchen and involves scale diagrams, measures, money, VAT and more. Task 2 is based on commercial office rental prices. Fully mapped to FM criteria.

An adaptation of John Thompson’s popular You’re in the money (1997 – see below) which makes good use of Argos and Littlewoods catalogues. This adaptation has differentiated task sheets (E2-3, and L1-2) and is ideal for underpinning many aspects of Functional Mathematics including money, odd-even numbers, problem solving, rounding, averages and more; in addition to developing problem solving skills.

Pay Day is a great adaptation of earlier bank balance games (Jane Marsh’s original E3-L1 version and Judith White’s adapted L2 business version both still availalbe – see below).
This version was written specially for Entry Level learners on job related provision and is designed to get learners to think about their own finances: both in terms of what affects their regular income and what they could potentially do to improve their own situation.
Ideal for (and fully mapped to) E2-E3 Functional Maths.

Literacy and numeracy questions all based on the word CHRISTMAS (can easily be adapted for other seasonal festivals such a Diwali, New Year’s Eve or Ramadan). Covers vowels, consonants, number, ratios, simple substitution, range, mode and more!
Ideal for mixed ability groups (E1-L2). Also provides very good practice in reading instructions carefully.

A light-hearted one page quiz (number problems suitable for E2-L1) that could also be given to students as a Christmas card.

Home and Away flat budgeting is a practical task where learners must furnish a flat for someone going off to uni.
Ideal for underpinning E3 Functional Maths and includes full mapping to Entry 3 FM criteria.
