Adult Numeracy, Functional Maths, and GCSE Resources

A set of posters / cards / checklists designed to prompt discussion, check learning and keep a record of student progression. Designed for Entry Level Functional Maths and English learners in an FE setting but suitable for all levels and subjects.
This resource was inspired by discussion on the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics) site about “understanding versus doing” and I would like to thank the forum members for their ideas and feedback.

Using a newspaper article to interpret numbers and use decimals, fractions and percentages. This resource introduces the learner to billions, but the majority of questions and process are aimed at Level 1 (with some suitable for Entry 3).

Questions cover writing numbers in words and figures, place value, equivalent fractions, dates, measures, rounding, etc. Makes useful revision material.

The Level 2 extension questions involve creating a chart and converting a currency – all with a Harry Potter theme.

An outstanding set of resources. Developed to prompt discussion on knife crime with parents and children in a family learning setting, they are equally suitable in an FE setting – prompting discussion between students and tutors. The materials can be used to focus on knife crime but are also useful as part of wider discussion about criminal behaviour.

The resources include

Two task sheets. The first, ‘My Budget’, encourages learners to compare their current budget with what it could be if they were in employment.
The second was used on an ASDAN Unit 3 business planning course and encourages discussion about the costs of self-employment.
Suitable for underpinning Functional Maths (E3 upwards).

Misleading averages is bound to provoke much discussion how the media, and even Government reports, can mislead us!

Uses illustrations and thought-provoking statements to instigate discussion and a realisation of what the ‘mean’ really tells us.

An L1-2 investigation that covers direct proportion (best buy), and rounding / calculating with money /decimals. Two options are included: students can either research Easter egg and chocolate prices on internet shopping sites or use those given. In both cases they must investigate the cost per 100g chocolate and work out the best buy. Final extension work includes consideration of ‘buy one get one free’ and ‘two for £…’ offers.

Written for learners on the autistic spectrum (who often find it particularly difficult to infer meaning that is not explicitly stated) but suitable for many literacy and/or numeracy students.
General financial numeracy theme on budgeting, expenditure, saving etc – accompanied by two way discussion, making sense of monetary idioms and cliches (e.g. ‘making both ends meet’), and writing complete sentences.

Florence was not just a famous nurse, she was also a very good mathematician. Use this resource to introduce pie charts, promote class discussion and learn some history!
