A clearly set out investigation into TV film age ratings. This makes an ideal investigation for mixed ability groups as it is cleverly differentiated for E3-L2 (E2 students could also participate with support).
All you need is a recent weekly TV guide.
Covers tallies, dual and single bar charts, pictograms, extracting and comparing information and designing a questionnaire. Fully mapped, and ideal for, Functional Maths.

Unusual, very useful and practical resource where learners must study two tally charts (neither is perfect!) and find the good and bad features.

Functional Maths - handling information and data

Written as a contextualised resource for Leisure, Travel and Tourism students but should appeal to all club-loving teenagers. Makes a good quick practice / revision / reminder exercise.
Aimed only at Level 1 students with definitions of both the mean average and range at the top, I find that these students don’t find the maths particularly difficult; they just have a problem remembering the definitions.

Functional Maths - handling information and data

I created this resource as practice in data handling for a Level 1 Functional Maths group and it covers skills from Entry 3 to Level 2. It includes creating tallies and charts, using a distance chart, calculating average and range, and working with money. It is fully mapped to the Functional Maths criteria and includes an answer sheet.

My students are 16-18, and have a limited knowledge of geography, so I included an outline map of the UK (not included in the resource) and got them to use a road map to find and mark the cities and towns that are on the distance chart.
