I wrote this to add to Timings in a Salon by Carrie Bray (see link left) as I needed to encourage my higher level students in the same area.

I started the session by giving students terminology which they had to define, then work out how much it was worth if a=1p b=2p etc. (see PPT).

I used then used tasks to recap on 24 hour and analogue time next then used the attached worksheets alongside Carrie's worksheet.

I then provided a Tarsia puzzle at the end to recap on time.

Grouped into four main topics: costing equipment (1 page), addition and subtraction (2 pages), perimeter and area (2 pages), and multiplication and division (2 pages) but many other skills are covered. With answer sheet, detailed Functional Maths mapping and tips.

A Functional Maths project for Entry 2/3 students. It requires students to read and interpret information from a hair salon appointment book. To use add, subtract and multiply; calculate stock and cost of services. Students must use the given appointment book throughout the whole project as well as show their working out and check their answers. It is a good introduction to the Functional Skills requirements of using all the information given rather than treating each question as a separate entity.
