I wrote this to add to Timings in a Salon by Carrie Bray (see link left) as I needed to encourage my higher level students in the same area.

I started the session by giving students terminology which they had to define, then work out how much it was worth if a=1p b=2p etc. (see PPT).

I used then used tasks to recap on 24 hour and analogue time next then used the attached worksheets alongside Carrie's worksheet.

I then provided a Tarsia puzzle at the end to recap on time.

A reading exercise that practises reading instructions in the context of hair and beauty. A real life text accompanied by questions to assess reading in detail, responding to a text, purpose of text, and commenting on how meaning is conveyed.
Ideal for, and fully mapped to, L1-2 Functional English.

An interesting article, quiz, research and writing task for Level 2 Beauty Therapy / Care students or any Literacy students interested in this topic (originally written for a group of teenagers).

A useful practice list that can be kept in students’ folders.

An unpunctuated text. Students must add capital letters, commas, full stops and apostrophes so that it makes sense.

Very useful for all types of spelling, vocabulary or alphabetical ordering work.

Two different multi-sensory activities – both make ideal starters.
1) pin-up sentence sorting (choice of generic, IT or beauty cards)
2) apostrophe dominoes.

A great project that covers many L1/2 numeracy elements. You win the lottery, buy a salon and have to furnish it from catalogues and/or Internet sites. Learn about budgeting, displaying data, working with areas and floor plans, bank statements, rounding, estimating, and much more. Everything must be written up as a comprehensive report with a clear conclusion (a great guidance page on report writing is included in the resource).
