Adult Literacy, Functional English, and GCSE Resources

Cards that can be laminated and used over and over again for speaking and listening using persuasive language. Ideal for Functional Skills English speaking, listening and communication practice.

Two resources, one for L1 and one for L2. Both resources include the same 12 short paragraphs. Each paragraph has four points – but which one is the main point?

Designed to be a group activity or a matching exercise this was adapted from an online resource at http://www.softschools.com/ because I didn’t have computer access for my groups and wanted to encourage group discussion. The learner has to read each short paragraph and decide which of four statements describes the main point.

Visual colour-coded resource, explaining the main plural spelling rules. Created for E2/E3 learners, but could also be useful for all visual learners working between E2-L2.

Includes: colour-coded fact sheet, blank table, worksheet and flash cards to cut out and laminate. Could be used for a number of different activities.

A set of exercises based on an article fromm the BBC News website.
This may interest learners who are keen on antiques. There is a comprehension exercise, exercises involving the identification of spelling errors (homophones) and a noun anagram exercise.
Useful for those working towards Level 1/2 Certificate in Adult Literacy.

This is an activity on New Year. It was written for an E3 ESOL class but could be adapted for E2 fairly easily too. There is a reading comprehension, a group activity, writing practice and also an optional cut-up “top Ten” resolutions activity.

I haven’t done a lesson plan to go with the resources as I think they could be easily adapted and used in different ways.

A first person autobiographical account of life in outback Australia.
Exercises include comprehension questions using when, where etc.
A revision of past tense verbs – regular and irregular.
A fill the gap using the correct verb tense.
A writing prompt for students to write about themselves – emphasising the use of conjunctions and short paragraphs.
A Wordsearch.
Includes a glossary of Australian words used in the text.

A warm up or round up exercise to get Functional Skills students interested in spelling! A lot of my students are interested in tattoos (this is one of the few jobs where the fact that I am covered in them is actually a good thing!) and this had led to a lot of discussion.

I often talk through the importance of considering their designs before getting them done and this ties in nicely. It could be used as part of a session on tattoos, for example discussions and writing a letter to a friend to tell them about the pros and cons of getting a tattoo.

A clever grammar/vocabulary/spelling task that combines a cloze exercise with homophone practice. The text is about the Victorian era and is particularly suitable for students with an interest in history.
