Ww/L1.1b Use strategies to aid accurate spelling
(i) Apply strategies for learning and remembering spelling which take into account the part played in accurate spelling by the visual memory (what words look like), motor memory (the use of joined-up handwriting) and auditory memory (what words sound like)
(ii) Apply understanding of the importance of personal learning style and of independent strategies to aid spelling
(iii) Use understanding of how words relate to each other in word families, to help with development of lexis and spelling
(iv) Use different types of dictionary, including standard English dictionaries not specifically developed for learners.

A PowerPoint presentation about homophones which includes a quiz, followed by a visual aid poster (pictured), an information sheet / handout, a workbook and an extension sheet.

Editor's notes

Great set of resources - PPT can be adapted to suit your own learners and the extra handouts and task sheets all help with consolidation. The final extension sheet has a useful emphasis on using mnemonics.

Mnemonics for writing numbers as words. This is a list of numbers from 1 to 20 and then 30,40,50.60,70,80,90,100. To be dipped into when a particular number's spelling is a struggle to remember.

Editor's notes

A fun set of mnemonics - especially useful for those tricky numbers such as four, fourteen and forty; twelve and eighteen. Also makes a good introduction when encouraging learners to make up their own mnemonics.
