Skim read key textual features (title, heading and illustrations) for different purposes (i) Understand that we skim read for different purposes, e.g. to decide whether something is of interest; to identify the source and subject, or writer's tone; to get the main themes and ideas (ii) Use skimming appropriately as a prior activity to reading in detail, or in some cases as an alternative to reading in detail (iii) Develop awareness of which textual features give clues to meaning, e.g. headlines and illustration (iv) Develop awareness of how to skim, e.g. recognising and making use of topic sentences, scanning for key words and names (v) Apply knowledge of lexis, especially fixed expressions, to help with reading for general gist Example: After the jury returned its verdict of guilty……
