Reading comprehension based on a BBC website report of New Year round the world. The first part requires specific answers (i.e. Shanghai rather than China) to require learners to think about their answers rather than copy out general lumps of text. The second part asks higher level, more analytical questions.
I am using as an introductory topic to New Year sessions.

Good for introduction to language of employment. I have used these with E1 to E3 and they work well as a differentiated resource

Higher levels can gauge implict information, especially for the school caretaker advert in writing covering application letters to include attributes such as working with children, being trustworthy and reliable etc)

Murder at the Grange parts 2 and 3

Submitted by Ruth Read on Fri, 2013-12-06 09:05

Numeracy: Functional Maths - measures, shape, money, MSS1/E2.3, MSS1/E2.4, MSS1/E3.3, MSS1/L1.2, MSS1/L1.3, MSS1/L2.2

Resource type: Investigation or project, Reading comprehension, Warm-up, Worksheet or assignment

Level: E2, E3, L1, L2

This is an adaptation of Murder at the Grange, which my students have always enjoyed.

I wanted to extend the work on calculating with time, so learners have to use and extend timetables and calculate multi-stage journey times. I also thought it would be good to have some female characters!

There’s a version for L1-2 and one for E2-3, although there is some overlap. In the L1-2 version I have used 24-hour times.
