History of Skills Workshop

Owned and maintained by Maggie Harnew, skillsworkshop dates back to the year 2000. The site has been hosted and developed by Fonant Ltd since 2011.

1998-2000

In late 1998 I became a volunteer basic skills tutor at Abingdon College. I had no previous teaching experience but soon realised that this was something I wanted to pursue. The next year, after attending a 6 week course to achieve my City & Guilds Initial Certificates in Teaching Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy, I was offered two classes of my own.

Site supporters

I would like to thank the basic skills tutors and other professionals from the following institutions for their interest and/or registering with the site; and for their contributions, feedback, encouragement, support or advice.

There may be duplication or omissions below: many colleges have merged or changed names since I began this list in 2001. Bold print indicates a 2019 entry.

Home Page

Welcome…

to skillsworkshop, the home of free adult literacy, numeracy and Functional Skills resources since 2001.

The site was redeveloped in 2011 and had a major upgrade in September 2018 to reflect the Reformed Functional Skills that took effect the following year. New items are added regularly and there are now more than 2300 free Functional Skills and Skills for Life resources.

About skillsworkshop.org

This site is owned and maintained by Maggie Harnew. I was a specialist study coach at Abingdon and Witney College for twenty one years and used the site as a resource in my literacy, numeracy, ESOL, study / language / dyslexia support, and Functional Skills classes. Resources on the site once reflected whatever subjects and levels I was teaching. However, I am delighted to say that there are now so many brilliant contributors that I barely have time to write my own resources!
