Comparing texts - gunpowder plot
Aimed at Functional Skills Level 2 learners, this resource is also suitable for the new 9 -1 GCSE requirements (Reading A2 and A3).
It is designed to be done towards the end of a unit on reading skills as it draws together skimming, scanning, information retrieval skills and the ability to collate information.
3 non-fiction texts on the theme of the gunpowder plot are provided along with a worksheet with exam-style reading comprehension questions about the 3 texts. The final question is a writing task which asks learners to collate relevant information from 2 of the texts to produce their own written piece for a specific audience on the theme of the gunpowder plot.
This resource could also be used as the basis for the group discussion speaking and listening assessment. The gunpowder plot is not a well-known topic among non-native English speakers and often leads to lively discussions in classes with a large proportion of EAL learners.
