First designed to help dyslexic students who found questions complicated to decipher, this resource was used at the beginning of sessions to familiarise students with the way questions are worded. Hints and checking methods, followed by questions to try.
5 Excel charts showing all the curriculum indicators in any particular level: one sheet each for E1, E2, E3, L1, L2.
Each chart provides, on one page, a quick, visual record of progress and achievement and is particularly useful in forming and updating individual learning plans. They can be kept in students’ basic skills folders and used to set targets and track progress.
For more information on these files please also download the PDF overview (below).
Several games to play: complete with game tiles and lotto boards. Ideal for for practising converting measures (Levels 1 and 2) and also another game board for selecting appropriate units of measure (Entry 3).
A practical investigation that can be enjoyed in mixed level classes. There's something for all learners from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
Editor's note. One of my favourite resources that somehow got lost when the site was redeveloped in 2011. Now fully updated to reflect the new 2018 Functional Skills content that come into effect September 2019. Pages 7-8 show detailed FS mapping to content descriptors and problem solving skills.

One of our most endearing and popular resources. This excellent investigation for mixed ability groups has inspired many other Skillsworkshop contributors to create related Smartie resources (see below for just a small selection). Covers almost all data handling curriculum elements from Entry 1 to Level 1 along with other elements from N1 (whole numbers) and Measure. Topics covered include counting, estimating, addition, sorting, tallies, bar charts, mean, range and more.
