Adult Numeracy, Functional Maths, and GCSE Resources

Whilst I designed this resource for Adult Numeracy learners, it has found much use over the years across the maths cohorts I've worked with from pre-GCSE to ESOL, and with GCSE learners.

It is in Excel format - 3 tabs for different activities and the second Excel file is the solution sheet.

The sheets are formatted to print off as A4 landscape to allow learners to have their own copies to work on.

This has always worked well as a starter activity with learners in small groups (or teams) and having a competitive edge.

Fun bingo game where learners practise measuring and drawing a grid – in addition to calculating areas and perimeters of simple shapes.

First one to a get line (or a full house) wins!

The package contains a range of worksheets and activities for E1-L1 Functional Maths.

An activity to explore money management and negative numbers. Be prepared to signpost students if need be.

The activity starts with discussing who is most likely to get into debt and then by recognising that anyone can if they don’t have good money skills.

This worked well as a bit of revision on measuring for a mixed class E2-L2. Also makes a good warm-up activity.
I’ve used different colours for easier and harder answers, so you can differentiate when you give the cards out (blue ones are supposed to be a bit easier, red ones a bit harder, and purple in between).

‘I have…Who has?’ is a fast-paced coin counting game that has been adapted from a game on Super Teacher Worksheets

For the game to work correctly all of the worksheets need to be distributed to your students so some students may get more than one card. This could be used as a way to differentiate with the higher level students being given more cards to work with.

A clever and unusual set of 3-way matching cards to help underpin the following skills: converting measures , expressing one number as a fraction of another, find parts of quantities, and simplifying fractions. Can be differentiated for E3-L2.
Forms part of a set of 5 resources linked to an excellent L1-2 lesson plan (that also focuses on expressing one number as a fraction of another). Can also be used independently.

This 16 piece triangular jigsaw is a great way to practise straightforward metric conversions (click on the picture left for details) and also finding simple fractions of amounts. Covers length, weight and capacity. As usual with Tarsia puzzles, you can choose to print either a standard or large version of the puzzle (select Output – large, i.e. three pieces per A4 sheet).

A multi-functional resource for Literacy or Numeracy. Sample TV listings by day, programme, start and end times, channel and genre. Use for alphabetic or numeric sorting, skimming and scanning exercises, literacy social sight vocabulary for days of the week, numeracy exercises for calculating time, etc. This resource contains some sample exercise questions to use which can be developed further according to need. I laminated the sheets and then cut up into days so lower level learners can move the elements around. Higher level learners can work from the whole page sheets as well.

A colourful mind map that can help with remembering metric prefixes, rough metric-Imperial conversions and more. Would also make a good classroom poster. Plus a separate matching game.
