Adult Numeracy, Functional Maths, and GCSE Resources

A range of questions that I have designed for my Functional Skills Maths learners.The focus is on the four operations (+ – x ÷) with wide coverage of measures and money.

There are two sets of similar, but differentiated, questions so that learners at both both levels can complete them in the same lesson. Each set of questions cover several themes (dog show and music festival) followed by a set of mixed questions and a final page of stretch and challenge tasks.

I designed this quiz as revision for my learners.
Trying to disguise the Functional Maths by putting it together with other rounds as a quiz to make it more interesting!

A simple but effective dice game to help students become familiar with, and practise, calculating percentages of amounts. You will need to customise 2 dice by writing amounts on one and percentages on the other.
I usually play this game with low ability students after teaching them a fail-safe calculator method for working out percentages of amounts, but it can be adapted for higher level learners.
It also helps to reinforce that 0% of a number is nothing and 100% of a number is all of it.

FDP (fraction – decimal – percentage) Functional Skills exam style questions at L1 and L2 (plus an extension question). Three lengthy questions.
The focus is on showing step by step, clear working out.

PPT covering

• Percentages of simple amounts (10%, 50% etc).
• More challenging amounts (e.g 15%)
• Percentage increase and decrease.
  Each objective has examples, followed by tasks.

A short cloze exercise on the Olympic Opening Ceremony based on numbers (E2-L1), plus a writing activity at 2 levels (E2-3 and L1-L2).

A contextualised set of Functional Maths tasks for catering and hospitalitystudents.
Includes:

• Counting up money and making up floats
• Adding up prices and working out change
• Extracting information from a table

A separate answer sheet is also included.

I use this in my ESOL Functional Maths classes. I know there are already excellent measures / postal charges resources on Skillsworkshop, but I wanted to do a matching type exercise, which ESOL students are very familiar with.

This is a data handling activity aimed at L1/2 learners that involves calculating the mean and range, constructing a bar chart and then making sense of what the results mean in a functional context.

More observant learners may rename this activity ‘Sophie’s choice’!
