In a world where social media is everywhere and in our lives day and night the impact of this on people as individuals can be a mixture of positivity and negativity. For a lot of people the impact of the promotion of having the ‘perfect body’ whether you are male / female can have a devastating impact for example bullying, mental health and worst case scenario suicide.  So how can we improve / promote a more positive image using social media and support m

I created this resource to try to engage my learners during lockdown. There are two reading tasks based on the same text, which I adapted for level 1 learners by using more basic vocabulary. The reading task can then be followed by the writing a blog task and I have included a step by step sheet to help with the writing task.

A topical reading comprehension on Captain Tom's 100th birthday with related writing and SLC (speaking listening and communication) tasks.  There are two versions: one for Entry Level 3 and one for Level 1 (also suitable for L2). Writing tasks include reports and emails (and at Entry 3 - a spelling test). SLC tasks cover short talks with Q&A sessions and discussions.

Reading and writing tasks based on an over-the-top article about a new ride at Nottingham’s annual Goose Fair.
The emphasis is on language features ( I HAD A FOREST) and persuasive writing but many aspects of L1-2 reading and writing are covered.

A set of two exercises (one vocabulary exercise, then a directed writing exercise) plus an extension (fun exercise where learners use the ‘wrong’ register to write a text) to learn about formal and informal language in English.

This is a reading comprehension and dictionary exercise based on the life of Fidel Castro. I have provided the reading text first and then the vocabulary work. However, with some groups it may be better to work on the vocabulary before tackling the text.

A writing activity that requires learners to write 2 emails suitable for the workplace. Tasks are loosely based on the type of writing tasks required for City & Guilds Functional English at E3. Also involves searching for a suitable gift (Argos book or web site).

Based loosely on C&G E3 literacy exam papers, this covers many of the criteria through a seasonal topic.
It includes reading comprehension questions (E3-L1), a dictionary and alphabetical order task (E2-E3), form filling (E2-E3) and letter writing (E3-L2). There’s also plenty of scope for discussion. The form filling and write-to-your MP tasks are also suitable for Functional English. Ideal for mixed ability groups.
