Functional Maths

Resources (covering a wide range of number, measure and data topics) particularly suitable for teaching and underpinning Functional Mathematics.

This is a set of three (maybe more) lessons which looks at the costs of a night out to London. It starts with students having to look at a train ticket and get the asked information from it – cost/type of ticket/time. It uses addition as students need to find out the cost of two tickets. They then use google to search times of trains. The next session looks at the cost of the theatre ticket and finding out the change you would have from a given amount again researching the theatre on the internet.

A worksheet giving details of 4 different whale watching tours (times, cost, accessibility, activities, etc.).

This is followed by 4 different scenarios, each describing a family or group. Students must choose the best tour for each group and work out the costs. As this holiday activity is in Australia, the price are in $AUD. An extra exercise could be to use the current exchange rate to work out the cost in your own currency.Includes answers.

I have created a small revision booklet on some of the topics that come up at Level 1 and 2 Edexcel Functional Skills Maths exams. This pack can be used for learners to complete self directed study or can be used alongside lessons. I have left it generic so can be adapted to suit different vocations.

Very topical and challenging set of tasks based on a news report about the new 5p charge for plastic carrier bags introduced in England on October 5 2015.

Questions range from Entry 3 to high Level 2 and cover dates, large numbers, bar charts, averages, interpreting data in tables, mean average and percentages. It also challenges learners’ reading and English comprehension skills. Bar chart question requires graph paper or Excel.

Top Tips for Maths tests is a handout/classroom resource that can be used as an activity or as a handout.

It takes learners through the process of working out a complex Level 2 Maths question, with reference to how the marks can be gained, and the maths skills required to complete the question. The question is taken from IQ sample assessment materials http://www.industryqualifications.org.uk/sectors/functionalskills and builds on common mistakes made by learners during ‘live’ assessments.

A seasonal themed maths quiz I created for my E3 students using Carrie Bray’s excellent “45 Christmas Questions” resource as a base. It was designed to provide a fun informal assessment on some of the topics covered in the half-term leading to Christmas.

A Level 1 version is also available.

Editor’s note
You can find Carrie’s original resource (which covered E3-L2) under See also below.
