Adult literacy: reading comprehension (Rt)

L2 reading comprehension based on a 2010 BBC article about Robot firm winning a contract with NASA. Tasks focus on general comprehension and vocabulary but there’s also an interesting task on abbreviations and symbols, and a short writing task. There is also an answer sheet and a useful links to online videos that can be used to introduce or expand the task.

A beautifully prepared E3-L1 literacy workbook. Produced to be used during Black History month (October) at Bolton College but can be used at any time. The main text is derived from Kwesi Bacchra’s review of “Claudia Jones, a life in exile” by Marika Sherwood.
Exercises include reading comprehension, correcting spellings, dictionary and alphabetical order work, abbreviations, research and creative writing.

Tasks focus on summarising / re-wording, and punctuation (speech marks) but also include general comprehension and a short writing task. There is also an answer sheet ans useful links to online videos and trailers that can be used to introduce the task.

Level 1 reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary tasks based on an Australian local news article about a successful youth art project in Deception Bay. The tasks can be concluded nicely with a related crossword puzzle – ideal for individual work or for group work if displayed on an IWB.

L1 literacy / ESOL practice on a slightly humorous BBC News article. It covers the main areas my learners have issues with: spelling, true or false and synonyms. With answer sheet.

Have a bit of fun whilst revising Level 2 Functional English reading! Based loosely on an Edexcel L2 practice paper (see links within the resources). Learners will need to have access to the three driving- related texts (insurance letter, newspaper article about road rage, and satnav road safety information) in order to answer the so you want to be a millionaire questions. These are available below as a separate download. Great for skimming and scanning practice.
