Equality and Diversity

Topical set of reading comprehension and research tasks written for Black History Month (October) but can be used at any time. Differentiated biographies (one for E3-L1, one for L1-L2) of Rosa Parks, known as “the mother of the civil rights movement”, with related comprehension, discussion and vocabulary tasks. There is also a cloze exercise and a timeline research task.

*A Yorkshire Yarn is a short documentary series exploring the English language learning experiences of three students at the University of Huddersfield. There are three episodes in the series.*

A beautifully prepared E3-L1 literacy workbook. Produced to be used during Black History month (October) at Bolton College but can be used at any time. The main text is derived from Kwesi Bacchra’s review of “Claudia Jones, a life in exile” by Marika Sherwood.
Exercises include reading comprehension, correcting spellings, dictionary and alphabetical order work, abbreviations, research and creative writing.

A revision of E3 (and some E2) numeracy skills all themed around England. Written for St George’s Day but can be used any time of year. Great for equality and diversity.
Question themes include: street parties and English weather.
Topics covered include writing large numbers, calendars, time, symmetry, money, division, rounding, money, bar charts, temperature, fractions and tallies.

Based loosely on C&G E3 literacy exam papers, this covers many of the criteria through a seasonal topic.
It includes reading comprehension questions (E3-L1), a dictionary and alphabetical order task (E2-E3), form filling (E2-E3) and letter writing (E3-L2). There’s also plenty of scope for discussion. The form filling and write-to-your MP tasks are also suitable for Functional English. Ideal for mixed ability groups.

Question themes include: population of UK districts, languages spoken in London, major religions, planning a St George’s Day street party. Topics covered include calculating and converting measures, working with large numbers, representing data, ratios, fractions, percentages and substitution.

An international themed resource for World Maths day on March 1st 2011 or any other day of the year.
It is also ideal for, and fully mapped to, Functional Maths. Will prompt disucssion on many issues from the UK population through to literacy rates in Peru and the Coral Coast in Fiji!
Includes tips for covering Functional Maths process skills.

Housework is a very funny video (with a rather predictable ending!) accompanied by words and jolly music and designed to introduce, complement or summarise the two related resources below.

A lovely topical reading task aimed at L1-2. Includes 10 multiple choice comprehension questions, open skim/scan questions and a dictionary task.
