Wt/E2.1a Compose simple text, selecting appropriate format for the genre and purpose

i) Compose and write short texts for different audiences, depending on the learner's needs and context, e.g. an e-mail to a teacher, a simple formal or informal letter, chat to friends on MSN, a personal narrative, poem or simple story, a message or record at work, a greetings card to a friend, an order form
(ii) Develop understanding of the concepts of genre, purpose and audience, e.g. when writing letters and emails, and stating purpose clearly
(iii) Recognise that texts of the same genre that share a common purpose will also share common features, such as layout, use of headings or sentence type, and begin to apply this understanding
(iv) Generate ideas for writing, decide what to include as appropriate to the purpose and audience (v) Understand that basic proof-reading, checking through what has been written for errors, is part of the process of writing, and apply this

Two scaffolded writing tasks that can used alone or as a follow up to the reading and related tasks in Dee Gets Fit (Rachel Emmett, 2009).

The first is just simple scaffold for E1/2 learners to record their ideas on keeping fit and healthy. The second is for E3 students to write a recipe for a healthy meal. Both these tasks would be most effective when preceded by a class or small group discussion and the creation of a word bank. They could also be used when teaching about instructional texts.
