Sc/L2.3b ask for information

  • Form questions, using a wide range of verb forms Examples: Ask for descriptions: Could you possibly describe him to us? Would you be able to give me an idea of what it's like?
  • Use a range of question types (e.g. tag questions, embedded questions), and choose appropriate forms to suit a range of situations and relationships Examples: Ask about processes: Tell me how the gears work on this bike, can you? Do you think you could explain how this functions?
  • Use intonation appropriate for the question type Examples: Ask for factual information in formal and informal situations: For heaven's sake, what happened? I'd be grateful if you could explain exactly what happened.
  • Realise that some questions may be seen as delicate, and preface these with appropriate introductory phrases Examples: Prepare to ask delicate questions: I don't want to seem rude, but I couldn't help noticing... I hope you don't mind my asking...

The Man Living in the Last House Standing

This lesson is based around the story of Birkenhead resident Charlie Wright, who famously refused to leave his house when the local council decided to demolish the estate around it. Students have the opportunity to discuss themes of community, identity and change. Students watch a short documentary about Charlie from the BBC archives and answer comprehension questions. Charlie's story provides a context for a role play task whereby learners have to decide how best to regenerate Charlie's lost neighbourhood.
