Sd/E1.1b Take part in more formal interaction (i) Know the importance of preparing what to say in a formal interaction, and predict what the other person might say. Examples At the doctor's: - What can I do for you? - I've got a pain in my chest. - How long have you had it? - About a week. - Any coughing, headaches? Prepare for interaction, by planning how to: - Introduce themselves (visiting a child's school) My name's Mrs. Ali. I'm Salim's mother. - Give personal information I live on the Seaford Estate. - State a problem We have problems with the water heater. - State a wish I don't want an evening class. - Make a request Can I have a prospectus? (ii) And express these functions where appropriate, in reasonably predictable situations (iii) Have strategies to help deal with misunderstanding, e.g. asking for repetition, asking for a written leaflet (iv) Know how to react when speaking to a stranger, e.g. when bumping into them, finding their glove, being asked the time

Problems in the home PPT provides group spelling and vocabulary practice along with ideas for speaking practice. Look at the pictures, discuss what the people do (electricians, gas engineers, plumbers, etc.) and the problems they fix. Then type the correct spelling into the box (ideal with a cordless keyboard) before checking the correct spelling with a mouse click. Finish with some skimming and scanning practice using related information from the Yellow Pages.
