A scaffolded investigation created for my Level 1 numeracy group but ideal for, and fully mapped to, L1-2 Functional maths.
Part 1 involves reading a description of a room and drawing simple scale diagrams (a grid is provided) before pricing up a carpet from a discount company.
Part 2 is more complex: calculate the length of skirting board, wallpaper, paint, dado rail and door framing required.
An original and very functional volume / area / converting measures task conceived during the heavy snows of winter 2010/11. It gives a new slant to snow clearing and could easily be adapted to different areas of driveways, paths, etc. Fully mapped to Functional Maths and adult numeracy.
Work out the cost of carpeting a flat (compound shapes) and seeding and fencing a rectangular lawn.
The step by step problem solving approach also makes this ideal for underpinning L1 Functional Maths – although the scaffolded worksheet on page 2 can be removed for confident students or for assessment purposes. It also provides useful practice with extracting information from a room plan and price list.
Fully mapped to L1 adult numeracy and Functional Maths.

AN MSS1/L1.1 Add, subtract, multiply & divide sums of money and record
A great project that covers many Functional maths and Functional English criteria. You win the lottery, buy a mobile phone shop and have to furnish it from catalogues and/or Internet sites.
Learn about budgeting, displaying data, working with areas and floor plans, bank statements, rounding, estimating, and much more. Everything must be written up as a comprehensive report with a clear conclusion (a great guidance page on report writing is included in the resource).

[img_assist|nid=4809|title=|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=100|height=76]Useful set of two resources.
1) A Smart notebook file that introduces the topic, provides practice questions and finishes with a room decorating project and a self-assessment check.
Please note you must have the Smart notebook software installed on your computer in order to open, view and use this resource http://smarttech.com/
2) PowerPoint scale diagram multiple choice quiz (5 questions) makes a good final activity or use later for revision.
Lovely, rather unusual ratio worksheet. One question involves working backwards from a paint mixing chart to discover what colour paint you will end up with! Although only a single sheet there is a good mix of questions building up from L1 to L2. With answer sheet and Numeracy / Functional maths mapping.
Draw a scale diagram of a room and then see if you can fit all the furniture in. Two identical sheets are provided – the only difference is the way the scale is expressed. Also includes perimeter and area questions. Fully mapped to L1-2 Functional Maths and adult numeracy.
These tasks are a great way to practice L1 measure, area and estimating skills in a practical problem solving scenario. Scaffolding is provided for individual tasks to help build the skills required for functionality. Ideal (and fully mapped to) L1 FM.
