Functional Skills ICT: Finding and selecting information
This is a scheme of work I have used in EBD schools to get the pupils engaged with English. It is a 7 week scheme of work aimed at between E3-L2, as it can be differentiated. I have also included the lesson plans that go with the scheme.
Editor’s note
Although written for a Key Stage 3/4 school setting this would work well as a way of embedding Functional English into a vocational childcare course or a family learning situation.

Functional Skills ICT: Developing, presenting and communicating information
First used with a group of E1-E2 numeracy students who had done an ICT based project involving cookery work and visiting a cafe to buy a snack. Print on A4 and fold into a very nice A5 leaflet.
The self assessment check boxes focus on basic money skills (recognising coins, giving change – but also slecting items from a list, weighing, etc.) but there is also the opportunity to link learning to numeracy at home or at college. Ideal for Entry Functional maths / catering / hospitality students.

Functional Skills ICT: Developing, presenting and communicating information
This is a fabulous board game created as a fun and gentle introduction to L1-2 Functional ICT (or other ICT type classes). It also makes a good ice breaker at the beginning of term. Best printed onto A3 and laminated.
There is also an extra bonus ‘Quiz makers’ game available online (link available on the answer sheet).
Fabulous set of resources used first with OCNW Construction students but also suitable for building services and engineering. Written for L1 Functional Skills students but can easily be simplified/extended to cover Entry 3 and Level 2.
Includes detailed mapping to Functional English, Functional Maths and Functional ICT.
Set of interactive and paper based activities based on buying and describing clothes. The on-screen activities (match words and pictures, drag and drop sentences, cloze activitiy, crossword) make a good group activity on an interactive whiteboard and can be extended and consolidated using the dialogue prompts, vocabulary cards and other activities in the PDF document.
A wonderfully detailed plan for 3 × 2 hours sessions for computer beginners. It is also mapped to the literacy curriculum – making it ideal for embedded learning and Entry Functional ICT. Includes scheme of work, session plans, feedback/evaluation forms and 7 resource sheets. ICT covers creating, opening, printing a document; formatting, printing, copying, proof reading. Mapped to Entry 2 and 3 speaking & listening, and writing (including several exercises on conjunctions and compound sentences).
