Major update Use compensation strategies to speed up mental addition when adding on numbers such as 19 or 39. A step by step work sheet: the pre-skills check is followed by more than 60 questions (including 'Stretch' tasks). Concludes with two new pages of Functional Skills exam style problems that can be used independently of pages 1-3. Exam style questions are based on a bike shop and a children's nursery.

**03/02/22 09:30 **updated (image depicting "no calculator" was not displaying properly on some devices, now replaced with new image)**25/1/22 09:24 **updated for minor corrections ('Mel' replaced with 'Chris' in second occurrence in Q1b page 3 and curriculum mapping corrected in Q3b page 4). In addition, an answer and detailed mapping sheet is now available to contributors.

London Marathon is a multi-level graduated Functional Maths workbook for Entry Level 1 to Level 2. A front page overview allows the teacher or learner to decide which levels and topics to work on. The emphasis throughout is on problem solving and showing working out. The workbook uses information from the 2022 London Marathon web page and event guide.

Pancake Day in Exdale is a multi-level graduated Functional Maths workbook for Entry Level 1 to Level 2. A front page overview allows the teacher or learner to decide which levels and topics to work on. All questions are based on one or other of two texts (pancake meals at the local pub and special offers in the Exdale Cook Shop). The emphasis throughout is on problem solving and showing working out.

At Entry Levels the main coverage is time, dates and money. Levels 1 and 2 include questions on time, converting between measures, circumference, percentage discount and mean.

Practise using reordering strategies with these extra E2 (E1 questions are in a separate Wordwall activity) questions for our recently updated E1-E2 Mental addition strategies (reordering) PDF worksheet (Maggie Harnew, 2005, updated Feb 2022). Match the correct answer to each addition problem. (Reordering involves adding up large numbers first and/or looking for pairs of numbers that add up to 10, 20, 30, etc.). **Can be used independently of the original resource.**

A hastily put together resource for Valentine's Day 2022 (but can be used in any year!). Although the covered subject content statements are all E1 or E2 - the problem solving element of some questions also makes this also suitable for E3, especially the final "Stretch" investigation. Questions are mapped but there is no answer sheet.

Practise using compensation strategies with these extra questions for our recently updated E2 Mental addition strategies (compensation) PDF worksheet (Maggie Harnew, 2005, updated Feb 2022). Match the correct answer to each addition problem.

A good way for learners to understand the importance of using reverse calculations to check an answer to a previous question. These check questions are appearing more and more in functional skills exams. I hope you find it as useful as I and my learners do.

**Editor's note**

A resource created for an adult learner to develop confidence in handling and working with money in everyday contexts.

**Editor's note**

A really functional resource based on a supermarket receipt. Covers many E2 and E3 content descriptors (each question is mapped). If you are a Skillsworkshop resource contributor an answer sheet will be available shortly.

**8/8/2021 Error fixed on page 3, no. 13.**

I've just designed these ready for my new starts in September. It is surprising how many learners come that get the simplest things wrong.
