Some real world scenarios given a twist to incorporate fractions, decimals, percentages & ratios.
By the end of the worksheet, students will have a better understanding of when they would use each format in the real world and have developed their critical analysis skills.
A range of questions that I have designed for my Functional Skills Maths learners. The focus is on the four operations (+ – x ÷) with wide coverage of measures and money.
There are two sets of similar, but differentiated, questions so that learners at both both levels can complete them in the same lesson. Each set of questions cover several themes (dog show and music festival) followed by a set of mixed questions and a final page of stretch and challenge tasks.
Editor’s note
With curriculum mapping.
No answer sheet.
The first page of this resource will help students to identify consonants and vowels, which then leads onto CVC word building and reading skills.
Pages 2 & 3 have two short texts that my students enjoyed very much. These help students practise reading and identifying the structure of CVC words. They will then be able to answer simple comprehension questions.
You may want to cut up the passages and set up a jigsaw reading activity. Can be used with lower level students.
This is a practical handling data task at L1 and L2 which uses the Internet to find the necesssary data in order to complete a Expenses claim form.
I work with Landbased students most of whom visit an exhibition at the Bath & West show ground. In this task they have to work out how much it will cost them to travel to the site and how much the entry fee is, then enter this information onto a expenses claim form as if they were submitting it to an employed to reclaim their costs.
For L2 students they need to find the actual cost of the fuel they use for the journey.
Two fun punctuation exercises for cat lovers.
Both are quite challenging. The first page requires full stops, capital letters and commas (E3-L1) whereas the second also includes quotation marks and apostrophes (L1-L2).

This Blue Cross resource was written for strong E3 or L1 (or even L2) ESOL learners. I first used it as a homework exercise. The English on the site is a little quirky but it is an exercise using authentic material which always has its upsides and downsides.
However, it is good on human interests and most people like animals. It involves ICT, Reading and Writing. It’s best to pre-teach the vocabulary.
Also ideal for, and fully mapped to, Functional Skills English Level 1 reading and writng.
