A great way to start a class – provides mental maths practice for E2-E3 but also suitable for higher level learners who can try it out with with large numbers and discuss how it works!

Aim Higher makes a great starter activity. Covers mental maths and written maths with the four operations and can be extended to cover BIDMAS (order of operations). Needs standard dice and dice (or cards) with mathematical symbols (see our useful links page for a good supplier of mathematical dice). Designed by Anne Pender, Diana Hookway and Louise Rowell (Level 2 learners at Abingdon & Witney College) and Sarah Richards (who provided the dice!)

Mental maths starter (doubling, halving, addition and subtraction) that can also be used as a gentle introduction to substitution.

Match addition and subtraction problems to the correct answers and practise mathematical vocabulary. Then play the Money Ladder game to practise coin recognition, and adding and subtracting to 10/20. 2 versions available (for E2 & E3). Complete with spinners and ladder sheets.

Number bonds to 10 and 20 . Two card games with full instructions and alternative games.

Entry 3 revision sheet (addition and subtraction of whole numbers and money)originally designed for a group of dyslexic maths learners, but useful for all Entry 3 students. The focus is on number skills along with language and spelling. Students are encouraged to use a code to show how much help (if any) they need with each question so they can see which skills they need to practise.
The problem solving nature of each question, along with an easy-to-use answer sheet showing clear working out / method, makes this ideal for Functional Mathematics.
