I have created this worksheet to assess learners studying maths at level 2 in solving practical problems which involve extracting and interpreting discrete data from a table and also calculating a percentage increase.

An activity using mobile phones. Students could also do a warm-up by measuring and weighing real phones (switched off)!

The lesson was designed for an E3 young learner class. The last section, using percentage changes, might suit stronger learners (L1 extension).

A set of cards that can be used to play a game where students have shares in a small company. Each group of three players receives ‘market updates’ in the form of cards that require them to divide a number in a ratio, or find the value of an amount given the value of part of the amount. Students are encouraged to keep full financial records. As a differentiation task for confident students, it is possible to calculate the percentage change in value of the shareholding at the end of the game.

Beautifully clear worksheet to be used in conjunction with John Thomson’s “percentage worker-outer” (see below). It is staggered to build up skills slowly – making it particularly good for the less confident learner who needs lots of practice.

Five wonderful sets of multiple choice revision questions covering Level 1 ratio, mean & range, fractions, percentages, and number (mostly place value & rounding). Each set consists of 9 cards and is individually mapped to the numeracy curriculum.
Cut up into cards and use as required. Use individual sets for targeted revision or mix with other sets of cards for general revision.

A fabulous, very clear lesson plan ideal for money-management / personal finance classes. The mathematical focus is on percentages (VAT) but it also covers rounding and extracting data and can be used in mixed ability classes from E2 -L2.

Practise percentages starts with a some questions based on the results of a survey in a college canteen – emphasising that percentages are ‘out of 100’. There is also a separate set of simple percentage increase / decrease questions.
