MSS1/L2.6

MSS1/L2.6 Calculate with units of measure between systems, using conversion tables and scales, and approximate conversion factors
(a) know rough equivalencies between common metric and imperial measures, e.g. 1lb is about 450 grams, a litre is a bit less than 2 pints, a gallon is about 4.5 litres, a kilogram is a bit more than 2lb, a metre is a bit more than a yard, an inch is about 2.5 cm, a foot is about 30 cm.
(b) know how to read conversion scales and tables

(c) know how to use approximate conversion factors, e.g. 1 inch = 2.54 cm

21 interesting (and challenging!) questions for practice with converting between metric and imperial measurements. Question pages can be divided amongst the class and then answers can be shared. Extension ideas could include measuring learners’ feet/ height and comparing them to the records.

Editor’s note
Also provides practice with rounding decimals to a sensible number of decimal places.
The answer sheet, which includes detailed working out, is only available to site contributors. Please see details within the resource.

I have created this worksheet to assess learners studying maths at level 2 in solving problems which involve extracting and interpreting continuous data from the conversion line graph metres to feet and calculating, comparing and estimating with units of length in the Imperial and metric system.

Eight different tasks based on three delightful Christmas mincemeat recipes – accompanied by very enticing photographs!. Suitable for E3-L2. Tasks cover metric measures, a web investigation, converting between metric and Imperial units, and ratio and proportion. Fully mapped to the Functional Maths criteria.

I worked with a plumbing tutor at Wiltshire College to write the attached task for a group of apprentice plumbers. The group enjoyed working on this. I was inspired to produce this after reading and using the Air Conditioner task contributed by Leia Fee (see below).

A set of 2 posters for the classroom – also useful as handouts.
Metric measures (L1 upwards) – clarifies metric prefixes
Imperial measures (L1-2) – I’m not expecting students to know or learn these facts but this poster makes a useful discussion prompt (about the difficulties of working with Imperial measures and how much easier it is to use metric units) and also includes interesting facts about the history of Imperial units.

A colourful mind map that can help with remembering metric prefixes, rough metric-Imperial conversions and more. Would also make a good classroom poster. Plus a separate matching game.

Topical practice with L1-L2 number and measure skills (plus a few at E3) and would make a good starter or homework activity. Most questions are based on recent data from the Big Freeze of January 2010. Topics include converting temperatures, converting between metric and Imperial units, proportion, negative nos. and percentrages.
The topical and problem solving nature also makes this very suitable for underpinning L1 and L2 Functional Maths.

Cocktail and smoothie ratios is a wonderful way to introduce ratio and proportion (also covers converting measures). Choose your favourites from the ‘menu’, work out ratios for the ingredients and calculate amounts required for multiples such as 6, 10 and 20 drinks, make up your own cocktail.
Adapted from Jodie Travis’s original version (see below). This adapted version includes a wider range of non-alcoholic cocktails / smoothies for students that do not drink alcohol.
Also ideal for underpinning L1-2 Functional Maths.
