# Functional Maths - measures, shape & space

Resources particularly suitable for teaching and underpinning Functional Mathematics. May cover any or all of the following topics: money (inc. simple interest); time; metric and Imperial measures of length, weight and capacity; temperature; compound measures inc. speed, density & rates of pay; 2D and 3D shapes inc. line symmetry; positional and directional vocabulary; reading sales; maps and scale plans; coordinates; angles; constructing and interpreting geometric diagrams and models (inc. nets and elevations); perimeter, area and volume.

5 questions, increasing in difficulty, to get learners to work out how many solar panels can fit on different size roofs. Involves metric conversions between mm, cm and m. Learners have to work with the panels being placed in 2 different orientations to work out the maximum number of panels that can fit.

Four challenging Functional Skills maths questions to encourage learners to use diagrams to cut shapes out of different materials. The questions are based on past Edexcel Functional skills exam questions that learners find difficult. Also involves metric conversions.

Three challenging Functional skills questions to get learners to draw 2D representations of 3D objects using a given scale. The questions are based on an exam question from an Edexcel L2 paper last year that learners found difficult.

A Bonfire Night themed resource covering some aspects of literacy and numeracy.

The resource contains a basic reading comprehension about the History of Bonfire Night. This is followed by a numeracy activity where students have to buy fireworks for a display with a budget of £300. The final activity is a writing task and learners have to create a poster advertising the event.

I created this for an ILS (independent life skills) class but it could be used with Entry Functional Skills learners too.

A contextualised set of Functional Maths tasks for catering and hospitalitystudents.

- Counting up money and making up floats
- Adding up prices and working out change
- Extracting information from a table

I use this in my ESOL Functional Maths classes. I know there are already excellent measures / postal charges resources on Skillsworkshop, but I wanted to do a matching type exercise, which ESOL students are very familiar with.

Revision of all 4 number functions (+,-,x,÷). Originally aimed at JobCentrePlus Upskill clients but suitable for all. Contexts include office, fast food restaurant, and care home The first page is adapted from Liverpool Community College Flexipacks. All other work is original.

A set of questions created by a small group of Performing Arts students studying Level 1 Maths.

The questions were made up during their pre-exam revision sessions.

Some questions are not quite what you’d expect to find in the real exam!

Many topics are covered include ratios, metric measures, area & perimeter, time, percentages and money.

The overall emphasis is on showing all working out and checking answers with reverse operations.

In this activity, learners have to calculate how much paint is required for a specified job, find prices from different sources and work out total prices. This can then be compared. The resource is in two versions – one with formulae for the required calculations and one without – different pages from each version can be mixed and match to meet different learners’ needs.

The activity requires internet access – however price lists could be substituted for this if this is not available in your context.
