Functional Maths - measures, shape & space

Resources particularly suitable for teaching and underpinning Functional Mathematics - using common measures, shape and space.  May cover any or all of the following topics:

  • money (inc. simple interest);
  • time
  • metric and Imperial measures of length, weight and capacity
  • temperature
  • compound measures  inc. speed, density & rates of pay
  • 2D and 3D shapes inc. line symmetry
  • positional and directional vocabulary
  • reading scales / using measuring instruments
  • maps and scale plans
  • coordinates (positive & negative)
  • angles
  • constructing and interpreting geometric diagrams and models (inc. nets and elevations)
  • perimeter, area and volume.

A Functional Maths activity based on a group of friends going out for a drink together. The main focus of the activity is on money and time calculations, but there are other elements included for variety.

In the construction trades there is still a need for some students to understand the difference between Imperial and metric units of measure. This is a Powerpoint presentation to help with this. I have used it with E3 and L1 students.

Editor’s note
I have classified this as L1 and L2.

A high interest worksheet which uses the layout of engines to reinforce some basic mathematical concepts, and to encourage reading. Lots of discussion points.
The angle of the V – right angle or acute angle?
Counting in 2s – How may cylinders – 2 rows of 3, etc.

Editor’s note: interesting mix of skills covered from E2 to L1. Focus is on angles but there is also basic doubling and counting in twos so would work well in mixed ability groups.

This resource is adapted from, and complements, the L1/2 resource with the same title created by Claire Douglas (see below).

The activity is based on recent changes to the minimun wage (Nov 2011). Students have to read the information given on the shop employees’ ages and new minimun pay to work out how much the staff are paid for their work.

I used this activity with my E3 students and they enjoyed it.

I made these files to help my E1 students become familiar with this question format before doing the assignments.

I had found in previous years that though they managed comparatives orally and could eventually make up sentences including them, they were confused by these questions in their assessments.

I hope someone else can find them useful.

A set of cards to cut out and ideally put in plastic balls or a jazzy box. Aimed at E2- E3 Functional Skills learners as an ice breaker, introductory lesson or for revision. Students need to work out the question and identify the maths skills they are using to answer it. Best printed onto card.
Questions are aimed to appeal to young adult students – e.g. clubbing, Facebook, food, mobiles, etc.
Questions cover the 4 operations, money, time, shapes and more.
26 cards. Includes Functional Maths mapping chart.
