AL Ww/E3.1 Spell common words

Spell correctly common words and relevant key words for work and special interest (a) Know and understand their own preferred strategies for extending spelling competence, including personal strategies for memorising spellings (b) Understand the importance of cumulative learning in spelling and of relating new to known spellings (c) Know that there are dictionaries specifically for spelling, and understand that ordinary dictionaries can be used to check spellings if the initial letters are known (d) Understand that some special-interest texts have glossaries of terms, which can be used as reference for spelling as well as meaning (e) Understand that a computer spell checker is of limited use until the user can judge how appropriate the suggested corrections are for the sense

Many of these common spellings used to crop up regularly in the former Level 1 literacy tests. They will also be useful for Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills students.

They have been categorised to make learning more manageable for learners, but some spellings will fit into more than one group.

This was designed to be used with a group of dyslexic learners but would be applicable for any learners with spelling difficulties.

I have used this by separating the group into small groups or pairs and then giving each group a different strategy to try with one of the words from the word list (two are provided – one for E2-E3, one for L1-2) or a word of their own that they want to spell.

A warm up or round up exercise to get Functional Skills students interested in spelling! A lot of my students are interested in tattoos (this is one of the few jobs where the fact that I am covered in them is actually a good thing!) and this had led to a lot of discussion.

I often talk through the importance of considering their designs before getting them done and this ties in nicely. It could be used as part of a session on tattoos, for example discussions and writing a letter to a friend to tell them about the pros and cons of getting a tattoo.
