Wt/L1.5: Use format and structure for different purposes

  • Understand that there are different ways of organising and presenting text, depending on its type and purpose, e.g. paragraphs, numbered lists, bulleted points, charts, tables, sub-headings
  • Understand that diagrams, sketches and drawings can be used alongside writing to make meaning clearer, e.g. in instructions, explanations
  • Understand that a lot of workplace writing uses pre-set and outline formats, e.g. accident report forms, timesheets, job sheets, memo headings

Related Adult ESOL curriculum elements: ESOL Wt/L1.3a Structure texts sequentially and coherently according to genre
Related Functional Skills English elements:  FE L1.24 Use format, structure and language appropriate for audience and purpose

Example of application and level:

Select the best format and structure for a purpose in their own writing, e.g. draw a flowchart to arrange some actions into steps.

Sample activities

  • Using a word processor, design a poster to advertise a local event.
  • Plan, structure and set out appropriately on paper or screen a ‘personal manifesto’, e.g. announcing a set of ‘house rules’ to the family, setting out some new year resolutions/promises to themselves or others/plans for a healthier lifestyle/a ‘wish list’ for the future.
