Wt/L1.3: Present information in a logical sequence, using paragraphs where appropriate

  • Understand that information is best presented so that the opening clearly signals the subject to the reader, points are organised in a logical order, it is clear how one point relates to another, and the whole makes coherent sense
  • Understand that paragraphs are one way of organising information in continuous text, enabling the main points to be expanded with supporting detail

Related Adult ESOL curriculum elements: ESOL Wt/L1.3a Structure texts sequentially and coherently according to genre
Related Functional Skills English elements: FE L1.22 Communicate information, ideas & opinions clearly, coherently and accurately and FE L1.25 Write consistently & accurately in complex sentences, using paragraphs where appropriate

Example of application and level:

Plan, draft and write some information or instructions where points are logically sequenced, e.g. a leaflet on the local neighbourhood for newcomers, a notice about the company social club and how to join.

Sample activities

  • Identify a topic from their own knowledge/interest/reading to write ‘an introduction’ to (e.g. greyhound racing/yoga/aerobics/weight training/country music). Discuss the key facts people might want to know; plan which points to include and in what order. Share the plan with others and ‘tweak’ if necessary.
  • Use this plan to draft an informal information text addressed directly to the reader, paying attention to its opening and to how one point follows from another (select from a list of linking words and phrases if necessary, e.g. firstly, secondly, finally, first of all, to sum up, you might think that, as well as, before, after, however, then, etc.)
