Ws/E2.3

Use punctuation correctly, e.g. capital letters, full stops and question marks
(a) Understand that capital letters and end-of-sentence punctuation cannot be used arbitrarily, but must mark the grammatical boundaries of a complete sentence
(b) Understand that punctuation is best thought about at the stage of composition and included as the sentences are put down, rather than added from scratch at the end
(c) Understand that questions are sentences that have a different word order from straightforward statements
(d) Understand that question marks signal to the reader that the sentence is asking a question

This is used to practise writing sentences in a format that is similar to those used for E2 Functional Skills writing assessments.
It includes a checklist for sentences and a reminder to use conjuntions. I use it after teaching the basics of sentences and conjunctions in order to give an opportunity to practise for the writing assessment. Three different tasks (note, email, complaint) plus a blank for your own task ideas.

A wonderful kinaesthetic card matching game designed to help learners remember when to use capital letters.

The game comprises 52 picture cards (26 proper nouns, 26 common nouns) and [img_assist|nid=4758|title=|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=100|height=58]26 double ended upper-lowercase dominoes. It not only reinforces knowledge of capital letters but also is a good speaking and listening activity. Learners often debate what or who the picture is and where it needs to go.
