Adult Lit Rw/E1.2 Decode simple, regular words

Decode simple, regular words (a) Understand that own language experience can be used when reading, to help predict sense and meaning of words (b) Understand that illustrations and other graphics can give clues to the likely meaning of individual words (c) Understand that written words correspond to their spoken equivalents and are composed of letters in combinations, to represent spoken sounds (d) Identify sounds in familiar, regular words from spoken experience, and recognise correspondence between sounds (phonemes) and letters (graphemes)

There is much evidence that phonics supports second language learning with ESOL learners at all levels. This resource is the first of a set that I use. It contains basic language information with terminology that is easy to understand, explains the code and the graphemes. It is easy to use, even if you (or your learners) have never used phonics.

Remember to use the sound of the letter for example /a/ as in cat, not /ay/ as in pay.

The first page of this resource will help students to identify consonants and vowels, which then leads onto CVC word building and reading skills.

Pages 2 & 3 have two short texts that my students enjoyed very much. These help students practise reading and identifying the structure of CVC words. They will then be able to answer simple comprehension questions.

You may want to cut up the passages and set up a jigsaw reading activity. Can be used with lower level students.

A game of bingo to practise reading (not listening to) the names of classroom objects. There are 16 different bingo cards and a page of word cards to be held up by the teacher. (Alternatively the teacher could write the words (one at a time) on the class whiteboard.
For a different take on this game (where names are called out) see Classroom Objects & Numbers bingo game written by Jacqui’s colleague Sian Evans (scroll down to “See also”).

This resource helps learners hear rhymes and recognise corresponding letters/digraphs, rimes and onsets etc. Take simple limericks and poems and get your learners to put them together.

I created my own limericks to match work we had been doing on long vowel sounds (it is not that difficult to do once you get started). Well-known poems and nursery rhymes also proved particularly popular as many knew them already by heart from childhood and some were doing them now with their children.

Great card game that encourages E1 learners to look more deeply into the content of words. For learners who spell phonetically, the game can also be used to develop an awareness of short vowel sounds.
Best laminated. With detailed instructions and extension ideas.
