(ii) Develop awareness of what lexis is appropriate for which subject and which audience, and apply this in writing
(iii) Develop awareness of a range of common collocations, and use them accurately in writing
(iv) Spell words with a wide range of spelling patterns accurately, with some consistency
(v) Understand that the spelling of homophones is related to meaning and grammar, and use this knowledge to aid spelling
(vi) use suffixes (e.g. -ette, -ism, -ic) and prefixes (e.g. hyper-, anti-, pre-, ex-) to build word families, and extend the range of words learners can spell accurately
(vii) Develop knowledge and use of spelling rules if this approach suits the learning style of the learner
(viii) Use knowledge of word families to help to see similarities in form.

Root word family cards are two sets of flash cards that can be used to visualise the concept of root words to entry level and L1 students.

The entry level cards contain a number of root words and their word families, with a picture representation of each word. The level one sheet contains a higher level of vocabulary and the pictures have been removed.
