Rw/L1.1a: Use reference material to find the meaning of unfamiliar words

  • Know there are different sources of information for finding the meaning of words, e.g. dictionaries, glossaries
  • Understand the structure of standard dictionary entries, the abbreviations used and the sort of information provided about each word (including its pronunciation), and make use of the structure to help to find information
  • Know that words are usually listed under 'stem' words
  • Predict from suffixes whether a word is likely to be a noun or adjective, e.g. if ending in ‘ness' or ‘ous', and notice links with related words (useful - usefulness; adventure - adventurous)
  • Know that dictionaries use the phonemic alphabet to advise readers on the pronunciation of unfamiliar words
