ESOL Rs/E1.1a Read and recognise simple sentence structures:

Read and recognise simple sentence structures: (i) Recognise common patterns of simple statements to support reading and understanding, e.g. subject-verb-object, subject-verb-prepositional phrase. (ii) Recognise instructions that start with the verb e.g. Keep left. Press the button. (iii) Understand how the word order in simple sentences in English can affect meaning. E.g. Suzanna likes Christobel. Is not the same as Christobel likes Suzanna.

An activity to introduce the past simple form by reading about Christmas. Read about Christmas in the present and past tense then identify regular and irregular and past simple verbs. Introduces students to past tense and also familiarises them with British Christmas traditions.

This is a ‘prepositions of place’ resource I use with my 16-19 (and adult!) ESOL learners before Christmas. It’s basically an Easter egg hunt but with Christmas presents instead of eggs.

The number of presents and lines can be tailored to the class. I’ve used this with E1/E2 ESOL groups, although there may be a use for Numeracy and Literacy. It’s a fun, lively activity which I hope you find useful.
