Resources added or updated October 2008 (screenshots available here) |
29/10 IMPORTANT info regarding pre-2005 resources. Please note that from November 1st 2008 any resource added to the site before 2005 (and not subsequently updated) will no longer be available. To view relevant resources you will need to visit 2002 additions 2003 additions and 2004 additions before the end of October. After this date only site contributors will be able to request copies of such resources by emailing me direct at maggie@skillsworkshop.org, although some of the more popular resources in this category (i.e. pre 2005) will eventually be updated and put back on the site. Please note that the 860 resources listed on the 'Top Ten' pages are not affected. If you are interested in the reasons please read on. When the site was started in 2001 I used my AOL email web space. As the site grew it was spread over three different AOL 'Hometown' addresses (this is why some older resources are located at strange web address such as members.aol.com/twittwoo!). In 2005 I obtained the skillsworkshop.org domain and moved the main site and all subsequent resources over to this url. Since then I have slowly updated and moved many of the older resources across but about 150 still remain in the old AOL web space. Last month AOL announced that they are removing all their old 'AOL hometown' files from Oct 31st. The good news is that this will save me some money as I have been paying a considerable sum each year just to maintain my AOL email address (which I no longer need) and the above mentioned pre-2005 resources. If you have any questions feel free to email me but I will be unable to forward old resources unless you are one of the 200 site contributors. |

12/08 Further cosmetic changes to the Entry 3 Literacy, Level 1 Literacy and Level 2 Literacy pages. Large sections (such as spelling, vocabulary, writing composition) have been split into sub-sections. I am also attempting to reduce the size of individual web pages (e.g. Entry 3 Literacy). The reasons for this are two-fold. Firstly to reduce download times of individual pages, especially large ones such as the Entry 3 and Level 1 literacy pages. Secondly, and more importantly, to reduce my bandwidth (which I pay for myself) before the 'Autumn rush' when term starts in September. To achieve this, duplicated descriptions of resources that cover multiple curriculum links (at one level) have been removed - especially in the Speaking & Listening and Vocabulary sections. For example, if a resources covers 3 or more Speaking & Listening elements at one level it will now be placed at the top of the section under "General Speaking and Listening resources". Although this makes for less-cluttered pages the disadvantage is that you may look up a specific curriculum level and find no listed resources! If this happens simply look above the listed curriculum element under the related "general" section. It is highly unlikely that you will find NO suitable resources as we now have coverage of every numeracy element and almost every literacy element over all five levels (E1-L2). If you still can't find a suitable resource please email me for help! |

06/04 preEntry numeracy |
Cardinal and ordinal number match Tarsia puzzle is 16 piece jigsaw. Simple and straightforward but it makes a great group activity. Cardinal and ordinal numbers are matched with number words to form a triangle. This puzzle constructs sequentially, i.e. the word 'one' is at the triangle's apex, matching with 1, then two, underneath it and so on up to 10 in cardinals and 8th in ordinals (this makes it a lot easier for preEntry learners to see how the triangle is constructed). Andrea suggests: "Distribute the pieces at random around the group (sitting round a table). Ask learners to identify the numbers on their pieces to match with spoken words as they appear in the gradually growing triangle in the centre of the table. My learners were enthralled watching the big triangle 'grow' from the little triangles". Contributed by Andrea McCulloch, LEAP Skills for Life Centre, Barnard Castle and Learn East, Peterlee. 27/03 L2 measures |
Converting measures Tarsia puzzle is 16 piece jigsaw that makes a great ice breaker. First used with older learners who were unused to metric measures, and a younger learner who was unused to imperial. Learners have to match metric measure descriptions or quantities with their imperial equivalents to solve the puzzle. Learners match metric measures to the equivalent Imperial measures in order to complete the triangle. Although converting between systems is only covered at level 2 of the curriculum the creator, Andrea, reports that E3/L1 students cope with this very well, as their life experiences help them. Andrea suggests that as the print is quite small on the standard sized puzzle, tutors might find it helpful to print out the larger version of the puzzle (select Output - large). Created with Tarsia Formulator (see our Useful Links page for further details) which is available for free download and creates its own custom Tarsia (fjsw) files.
