Covers many E2 MSS1 (common measures) and MSS2 (shape and space) elements and will be filed under General Entry 2 measure MSS1 resources and General E2 shape and space resources. NOTE: to ensure correct size of scale drawing on page 3 - set page scaling to 'none' when printing this PDF. tarsia fjsw Cardinal and ordinal number match Tarsia puzzle is 16 piece jigsaw. Simple and straightforward but it makes a great group activity. Cardinal and ordinal numbers are matched with number words to form a triangle. This puzzle constructs sequentially, i.e. the word 'one' is at the triangle's apex, matching with 1, then two, underneath it and so on up to 10 in cardinals and 8th in ordinals (this makes it a lot easier for preEntry learners to see how the triangle is constructed). Andrea suggests: "Distribute the pieces at random around the group (sitting round a table). Ask learners to identify the numbers on their pieces to match with spoken words as they appear in the gradually growing triangle in the centre of the table. My learners were enthralled watching the big triangle 'grow' from the little triangles". Contributed by Andrea McCulloch, LEAP Skills for Life Centre, Barnard Castle and Learn East, Peterlee.10K. tarsia fjsw
Converting measures Tarsia puzzle
is 16 piece jigsaw that makes a great ice breaker. First used with older
learners who were unused to metric measures, and a younger learner who
was unused to imperial. Learners have to match metric
measure descriptions or quantities with their imperial equivalents to
solve the puzzle. Learners match metric measures to the equivalent
Imperial measures in order to complete the triangle. Although converting
between systems is only covered at level 2 of the curriculum the
creator, Andrea, reports that E3/L1 students cope with this very well,
as their life experiences help them. Andrea suggests that as the
print is quite small on the standard sized puzzle, tutors might find it
helpful to print out the larger version of the puzzle (select Output -
large). Created with
Tarsia Formulator (see our Useful
Links page for further details) which is available for free download
