Here is another Level 1-2 variant on the classic ‘Smarties’ investigation which incorporates the use of a PC and Excel. I stopped using Smarties and Skittles because of the health and hygiene issues.
I stumbled upon the Foam squares at www.craftpacks.co.uk ‘Giant Jar of Foam Squares for £4.75 + 20% VAT. The exercise is in two parts: the first part a bit like Smarties and then the second part covers ‘mean, mode, median and range’. Both parts introduce the elements of Excel used in changing data and help the learner understand charts and compare their results with those created ‘by hand’.
