Literacy: Functional English - speaking, listening & communication, Functional English - writing

Context: Art Film Media Music TV

Level: L1, L2

Resource type: Assessment material, Investigation or project, Listening and/or speaking activity, Writing prompts

I have created this lesson to try and cover the main criteria laid out by C&G for the Speaking and Listening English Functional Skills, Level 2 internally set assessment (activity 2 – presentation).

I trialled it with my learners as a ‘practise’ presentation before their final assessment. In the future I hope to use it as an official internal assessment, once I have received official feedback from the awarding body external verifier, learners, other tutors, etc.

I wanted to produce a fun scenario for adult learners (army personnel). It is an interactive lesson and I wanted to stimulate the learners’ creativity and imagination whilst also helping them complete speaking and listening assessments.

Rationale:
The topic of using persuasive techniques to appeal to a particular audience was chosen to suit my learning group. All students are in the army. Students have relocated from across the Britain and the Commonwealth, with an eclectic and diverse range of values and experiences. All will need to be able to present themselves in a positive way when reapplying for jobs and attending interviews, and when re-entering civilian society.

Editor’s note
Works for any AB – not just C&G. Tutor pack includes extra notes and teaching ideas for the presentation. The 15 page learner logbook covers a related preliminary writing task (writing to Dragons’ Den) and then has a multitude of ideas and planning sheets for the presentation (Dragons’ Den pitch) and a final reflective self assessment.
