Numeracy: Functional Maths - measures, shape, money

Context: Catering Food Nutrition

Level: L1

Resource type: Worksheet or assignment

A resource for maths to allow students to calculate the cost of a home made pizza and compare to a takeaway / store bought pizza. Considering profits and recipe scale.
2 different levels of sheet Foundation and higher that can be printed back to back with a design ideas sheet to give the costing some context or used in a catering / life skills lesson for cross curricular.

Odd even picture reveal activity

Submitted by Marc Stewart on Thu, 2017-11-16 19:40

Numeracy: Functional Maths - number, N1/E2.1, N1/E2.2, N1/E3.1

Resource type: Hands-on / practical activity, ICT task sheet, Resource generator, Worksheet or assignment

Level: E2, E3

This is an Excel file with a basic odd/even activity. I took inspiration from Jean Thomas’ “Reveal the hidden shapes!” activity from 2005.

With this activity, the tutor can design a picture (or one learner can design a picture for another learner) and it produces a printable sheet.

Numeracy: Functional Maths - number

Resource type: Worksheet or assignment

Level: L1, L2

Two separate resources: one for L1, one for L2.
I developed these because of my frustration that learners (many that have already been put through constant re-sits) are expected to tackle Functional Skills exam papers and multi-step problems before they have been taught or have mastered the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

Many aspects of place value are covered including reading & writing large numbers, ordering numbers, negative numbers, rounding, and the correct use of < and > symbols.

Using distance and mileage charts

Submitted by Nicola Smith on Mon, 2017-09-25 18:13

Numeracy: Functional Maths, Length weight capacity temperature scales, HD1/E3.1, HD1/L1.1, MSS1/L1.5

Context: Motor vehicles & Transport

Level: E3, L1

Resource type: Discussion points, Interactive presentation

Functional skills maths.
Extract information from mileage and distance (network) diagrams. Complete a mileage chart.
Editor’s note
With worked solutions, pop up help and a final challenge question.
Ideal as an introduction or for revision.

Formula 1 Functional Maths

Submitted by Bruce Nightingale on Sun, 2017-09-17 19:23

Numeracy: GCSE Maths - Foundation (1-5), Functional Maths - number, N1/L1.11, N1/L2.4

Context: Motor vehicles & Transport, Sport

Level: L1, L2

Resource type: Worksheet or assignment

A set of Formula 1 scenarios based on the four rules of mathematics and using formulae expressed in words and/or numbers. This resource tests students’ ability to use formulae to solve problems based on a motor racing car travelling on a race track. Some of the scenarios test the students ability to convert units to get a sensible answer. I encourage my students to estimate the answers before attempting for real! Some do, some don’t …

Editor’s note
With Functional Maths mapping and sample answers.

Working with Data

Submitted by Natasha Galliford on Mon, 2017-06-12 10:58

Numeracy: Functional Maths - data handling, Functional Maths - measures, shape, money, Functional Maths - number, Averages and range, HD1/L1.1, HD1/L2.1, HD1/L1.2, HD1/L2.2

Free tags: football, Glastonbury, weather

Context: Leisure Travel Tourism, Sport

Level: L1, L2

Resource type: Worksheet or assignment

This resource uses several tables of data and requires the user to complete calculations based on the data such as mean, median, mode and range as well as percentages and rounding. There is also a task where the learner must create a chart based on a table of data.

Editor’s note
There is something for everyone in this robust resource as it’s split into three sections: weather, Premier League and Glastonbury Festival. With answers and curriculum mapping.

Guinness world records

Submitted by Hannah Yates on Mon, 2017-06-05 11:51

Numeracy: Functional Maths - measures, shape, money, N2/L2.5, N2/L2.6, MSS1/L2.5, MSS1/L2.6

Context: Art Film Media Music TV

Level: L2

Resource type: Worksheet or assignment

21 interesting (and challenging!) questions for practice with converting between metric and imperial measurements. Question pages can be divided amongst the class and then answers can be shared. Extension ideas could include measuring learners’ feet/ height and comparing them to the records.

Editor’s note
Also provides practice with rounding decimals to a sensible number of decimal places. *The answer sheet, which includes detailed working out, is only available to site contributors.

Probability AfL plenary cards

Submitted by Chris Greaves on Sun, 2017-06-04 09:37

Numeracy: Functional Maths - data handling, HD2/L1.2

Resource type: Interactive presentation

Level: L1

A nice way to check learning of probability at the end of a session.

Decimal multiplication connect 4

Submitted by Hannah Yates on Fri, 2017-06-02 16:39

Numeracy: Functional Maths - number, N2/L1.5, N2/L2.6

Resource type: Game, Teaching idea

Level: L1, L2

A game for 2 players to help with multiplying decimals with or without a calculator.
Learners take turns to choose 2 numbers to multiply, then cover up the answer on the grid. This continues until a player has 4 counters/initials in a row(diagonally, horizontally or vertically).
Prompts can be used for learners to pick a target answer and to try to work out which 2 decimals are going to give that answer.
Editor’s note
Laminate for re-use. A great game.
