As expected, December was a bumper month for Christmas-related downloads. The number one favourite download was Susan McGuiness’s Christmas general knowledge quiz with almost 4000 downloads.

Ice breakers for the new term

Check out our ice breakers including some recent arrivals.

Functional Maths try Numeracy bingo ice breaker or Foods that we like.
Functional English try People bingo, Capital letter dominoes or Alphabet game quiz sheets.
Functional ICT try the PC Quiz Game
ESOL try the ESOL Chatter groups

We also have lots of games: Tarsia jigsaw puzzles are particularly good and always prompt discussion and teamwork.

Click on any ESOL element link and full details will now appear at the top of the search page. E.g. if you click on Rt/E2.1a you will see this:

This now completes all descriptors (literacy, numeracy, ESOL) except those for pre-Entry.

The numeracy curriculum descriptors were finished in June.

This mammoth task has now been completed. Now, if you select an N1 (whole numbers), N2 (fractions, decimals & percentages) or HD (data handling) curriculum element and click on it, the full description of the element will be given at the top of the search results list.

Volunteers wanted to update Wimbledon resources

Thanks to Christine Robinson and Leia Fee, we have two very popular Wimbledon resources, one for literacy and one for numeracy. Follow our Wimbledon tag to find them.

Both these resources require annual updates. Chris’s cannot be updated until tomorrow when the seeds are announced. Leia’s needs last year’s champions to be added to the data tables.

I’ve now introduced a new, improved Functional English help sheet. Aimed primarily at vocational tutors who are trying to get their heads around embedding Functional English into mainstream lessons, it will be customised and then appended to each major new Functional English resource that is published on the site. Click the picture to see a preview of an Entry 2-3 Reading version.

I’ve just introduced a new improved mapping / tips document. This will be customised and then appended to each new Functional Maths resource that is published on the site. Click the picture to see a preview. It’s aimed at tutors who are trying to get their heads around teaching Functional Maths and want help with developing their learners’ process skills.

The key point about Functional Maths is that it is the three process skills (representing, analysing and interpreting) that are assessed.

Royal Wedding ideas

The wedding is over but there’s still a lot of mileage in using it as a teaching topic. In fact, for younger FE learners (e.g. 16-19) who may have never experienced a similar national occasion, it might make more sense to use it as a topic after they have some personal knowledge behind them.
