HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESOURCE LISTINGS AND THE CURRICULUM ELEMENTS ON THIS PAGE

All resources on this page are all linked to specific levels of N1/N2 (whole numbers / fractions, decimals, %s) in the UK Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum. To find resources for other areas of the curriculum (measures, data handling) and other levels (E1, E2, E3, L1 number) click here.  If you can't find the resource you need contact Maggie for help. The original 2001 printed version of the adult numeracy curriculum has been updated (2009) and replaced by an online interactive curriculum on the Excellence Gateway site (you will need to register in order to access the literacy, numeracy, pre-entry & ESOL curricula).

N2/L2.2 Identify equivalencies between fractions, decimals and percentages.

The deep blue section gives the curriculum level and element number. N2 = fractions, decimals,  percentages (N1 = whole numbers), L2 = Level 2.

(a) understand that fractions, decimals and percentages are different ways of expressing the same thing

The medium blue section gives extra information about the skills, knowledge and understanding expected from learners after working on this curriculum element.

There can be between 0-7 sub-elements listed (this example includes 3: labelled a, b and c).

Note - white highlighting indicates elements or sub-elements that have been added or amended in the 2009 curriculum update.

(b) know that percentages are fractions out of 100
(c) know that decimal fractions are expressed in  tenths, hundredths, thousandths
  • Match fractions, decimals and percentages.
  •  Order a mix of fractions, decimals, percentages.
  • Re-write adverts or headlines that contain fractions or percentages using an equivalent form.
  • Convert fractions to decimals to enter them in a calculator or spreadsheet.
  • Use a spreadsheet to investigate the connection between percentages, decimal fractions and common fractions. Enter decimal fractions in a column and copy to the next two columns. Format one column to percentages and one to fractions (see Excel Help on formatting to fractions).

The pale blue bulleted section lists suggested activities and examples as listed in the new online curriculum. The new online curriculum on the Excellence Gateway also has an area where tutors can add their own suggested activities.

N1/L2.4 Evaluate expressions and make substitutions in given formulae in words ands symbols to produce results
(a) understand that words and symbols in expressions and formulae represent variable quantities (numbers), not things (i.e. 2a + 2b cannot be explained as 2 apples and 2 bananas)
(b) understand that the contents of brackets must be worked out first
(c) understand that, when there is no operator between a number and a variable, or two variables, multiplication is implied, e.g. 2a  = 2 x a; ab = a x b; 2ab = 2 x a x b
(d) understand that, when there is no operator between a number and a bracket, multiplication is implied, e.g. 2(a + b) = 2 x (a + b)
  • Match expressions in words and symbols.
  • Convert expressions from words to symbols, and vice versa.
  • Evaluate simple expressions using a single variable, two variables, etc.
  • Evaluate simple formulae using brackets, e.g. perimeter = 2 (l + w).

  • Use formulae for calculating miles per gallon or speed, e.g. distance = speed x time.
  • Use simple formulae in spreadsheets.
  • Discuss formulae such as conversion from °C to °F, using the formula °C = 5/9 (°F – 32).
  • Use the compound interest formula.

N2/L2.8 Find percentage parts of quantities and measurements
(a) understand that percentages can be worked out in different ways
(b) know how to work out VAT
(c) understand that the rate of VAT is set by government and is subject to change
  • Discuss how increasing a quantity by a percentage is '100 + n' %, e.g. increasing a price of £36 by 20% can be found by finding 120% of £36.

  • Discuss how decreasing a quantity by a percentage can be found by calculating '100 - n' %, e.g. reducing a price by 20% can be achieved by finding 80% of the price.

  • Practise examples in context, e.g. the effect of a percentage increase in the cost of fuel on household bills, adding VAT to a car service or mail order item (such as a computer), adding 30% to prices as a profit margin in a shop. Use any method.

  • Understand compound percentages, e.g. car insurance + 60% no claims + 20% age reduction + 20% post code reduction does not equal free insurance!

  • Calculate VAT on a range of items, e.g. utilities, insurance, clothing.
